Customization

Make Ottex work exactly the way you want.

App-Specific Modes

Modes let you customize how Ottex transcribes based on which app you're using. Create different instructions for different contexts.

Custom Instructions (Global)

Set global preferences that apply everywhere. Go to Settings → Instructions → Custom Instructions.

Example instructions:

  • Use British English spelling
  • Always use Oxford comma
  • Keep responses concise
  • Use sentence case for headings

Creating App Modes

Create modes that automatically activate when you're in specific apps:

  1. Go to Settings → Instructions
  2. Click "Create mode"
  3. Name your mode and add apps it should activate for
  4. Write instructions specific to that context

Example Modes

Coding ModeCursor, VS Code, Xcode

"I'm writing code. Preserve technical terms exactly. Format code blocks with proper syntax. Use camelCase for variables."

Casual ChatSlack, Discord, Messages

"This is casual conversation. Use informal tone. It's okay to use contractions and casual language."

Email ModeGmail, Outlook, Mail

"I'm writing professional emails. Use proper salutations. Keep tone professional but friendly."

Custom Dictionary

Add specialized terms, names, technical jargon, or brand names to help Ottex recognize them correctly. This is especially useful for:

  • People's names (colleagues, clients)
  • Company and product names
  • Technical terminology
  • Industry-specific jargon
  • Abbreviations and acronyms

How to add: Go to Settings → Voice to Text → Dictionary and add your terms.

Example entries:

Ottex
OpenRouter
Claude
GPT-4
John McAdams (CEO)
HIPAA compliance
Kubernetes

Tip: Add names and terms you use frequently. This dramatically improves recognition accuracy.

Voice Snippets

Voice snippets let you insert predefined text blocks by speaking a trigger phrase. Perfect for:

  • Email signatures
  • Common responses
  • Contact information
  • Boilerplate text
  • Code snippets

Creating Snippets

  1. Go to Settings → Snippets
  2. Click "Add Snippet"
  3. Enter a name (e.g., "Work Email")
  4. Set a voice trigger (e.g., "work email address")
  5. Enter the expansion text
  6. Optionally add an AI hint for contextual insertion
You say:

Please contact me at work email address

Ottex writes:

Please contact me at [email protected]

AI Hints: Add hints like "This is an email address—use it naturally" to help AI integrate snippets contextually.

Context Awareness

Context Awareness lets AI see your screen to provide smarter, more relevant responses. This is an experimental feature.

Privacy Note: When enabled, Ottex captures a screenshot of your active window and sends it to your AI provider (OpenRouter/Google). This increases API costs as images use more tokens. Only enable if you need contextual responses.

When to Use

  • Email replies: AI can see the email you're replying to
  • Chat responses: AI understands the conversation context
  • Form filling: AI can see what fields need to be filled
  • Document editing: AI understands what you're working on

How to Enable

  1. Go to Settings → Voice to Text
  2. Toggle on "Context Awareness"
  3. Grant Screen Recording permission when prompted
