Choose Vowen for Windows or $49 one-time desktop dictation and meetings, if you can configure models or providers. Choose Alter for customizable automatic dictation cleanup and configured CRM and Linear meeting workflows on Mac, or Ottex for Mac/iOS dictation with saved writing rules and CRM or ticket drafts.
Alter has a free plan; Vowen Free caps saved meeting notes and manual file transcriptions at 10 each for the install’s lifetime. Ottex has free local-model and BYOK app paths; BYOK provider charges are separate.
Alter Local+ is $3.5/mo or $29/yr, Pro is $29/mo or $240/yr, and Lifetime is $720 once; Vowen Pro is $49 once. Ottex Pro is $14/mo or $168/yr, with free local-model and BYOK app access; BYOK provider usage costs extra.
For audio privacy, all three offer on-device recognition: Alter uses Apple or downloaded Whisper models, Vowen uses downloaded speech models, and Ottex uses Whisper or Parakeet v3. Local recognition protects that processing step; it does not establish that subsequent AI cleanup also stays on-device.
Switch to Vowen for Windows or its $49 Pro license if you accept model or provider setup; stay with Alter if its custom dictation cleanup and configured CRM and Linear workflows serve you. Consider Ottex for Mac/iOS dictation with automatic profile instructions and ticket drafts from meetings.
Vowen supports Windows and Mac; Alter requires macOS 15+ and currently ships a beta release. Ottex supports Mac and iOS; none of the three lists Android support.
All three support offline speech recognition with local models: Alter offers Apple and downloaded Whisper models, Vowen offers downloaded speech models, and Ottex offers Whisper and Parakeet v3. Overall language counts are 50 for Alter, 99 for Vowen and 100 for Ottex; these do not establish each local model’s coverage.
